The Food and Drug Administration on Friday said it's working with Pfizer Inc. to block the sale of the impotence drug Viagra, which is marketed as a "little blue pill" and used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Pfizer's FDA said the drug will be sold at a price of $2.60 for 30 tablets, while another erectile dysfunction treatment is expected to start in the United States in March. In the second half of this year, Pfizer's Viagra will have to be sold at a significantly lower price than its competitors.
Viagra is used to treat impotence, which is caused by the inability to have enough blood to flow through the penis. The impotence drug can only be taken when needed and works in the absence of sexual stimulation. The drug's effectiveness in treating erectile dysfunction has been proven by a study of more than 6,500 men who took Viagra before having intercourse.
In March, the FDA said Pfizer's Viagra will be available for purchase at pharmacies in the United States and the European Union, while Viagra will be available at its generic drugstore in Europe.
Viagra will also be available at the drugstore at a lower price than the prices of the original impotence drug.

The Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers to stop taking Viagra, as well as other impotence drugs, at the first signs of signs of a possible safety concern. Consumers who have taken Viagra for a long time may have used a different drug.
The FDA said it's working with Pfizer and its other partners to develop a new impotence drug that would work in the absence of sexual stimulation.
Pfizer, which has been using Viagra to help women and children use birth control pills, said it has received final approval from the FDA for the drug's use.
The drug, which contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, is approved for sale through pharmacies in the United States, Europe and Canada.

A new class of erectile dysfunction drug is cheaper than Viagra. But the cheaper ED pills could also put a dent in the cost of treating erectile dysfunction, says, a professor of urology at the University of Washington. He and his co-authors are from the University of Washington, Seattle, Seattle and the Department of Urology and Sex Medicine. The new drug is called sildenafil, and it is FDA-approved for ED treatment in the U. S. It is available for purchase in pharmacies, and it is a cheaper alternative to Viagra. But the cost of the cheaper generic Viagra could be much higher, and it could be a major health issue.
